Ruby on Rails System Administrator
http://www.blueboxgrid.com/about/careers/

Blue Box is on a quest to find our next system guru to join our elite
server team. Since 2003, Blue Box has focused on providing
personalized, professional and reliable web hosting and dedicated
servers for small businesses. Our tremendous growth, particularly in
the realm of Ruby on Rails managed hosting has created a tremendous
need for smart and creative system administrators to join our
existing team with the sole mission of serving our customers to the
best possible extent.

The Senior Systems Administrator (aka System Guru) performs a wide
variety of tasks directly related to the administration and support
of Linux systems in our high availability web-hosting environment.
Additional, this position will help handle overflow tech support
emails and phone calls relating to web hosting and dedicated server
questions.

While we are looking for someone in the Seattle / Tacoma (Washington)
corridor who can have a physical presence at our data center, we are
open to review resumes for remote workers (San Francisco Bay Area
preferred).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Systems Administrator will be involved day to day with:

     * The administration of Red Hat Enterprise and Free BSD boxes.
     * Hardware support for Dell and Super Micro Servers running on
Intel architecture.
     * Shell scripting for various system administration tasks
including monitoring.
     * Providing phone and email support to web hosting customers.
     * System performance optimization.

QUALIFICATIONS
Our core business is in Ruby on Rails managed hosting, so we"re
looking for someone with experience in the field. Our employee will
get one paid day a week to spend on his or her own Ruby on Rails
projects. We"re in the process of launching some exciting new rails
oriented products and our candidate will hopefully share that
enthusiasm. Additionally, we are looking for a candidate who is
currently active in the rails community or willing to be.

Our ideal candidate is a self-starter and self-learner, intelligent
and able to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing and potentially
demanding environment. Because of the wide variety of software and
skills required, it is not expected that the candidate be familiar
with all systems currently in use (see a semi-complete list at the
bottom of this document). We will train our gurus on the specifics of
our systems, but the candidate should come to the job with an
understanding of the basics of computer networking, internet
protocols including TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP, POP3, and DNS. Furthermore,
the candidate should posses the following traits:

     * Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
     * Ability to seek creative, viable solutions to problems.
     * Strong analytical and computer skills.
     * Ability to work independently.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
The desired candidate will have or be in the process of obtaining a
degree in a Computer Science or posses over 2 years of systems
administration experience, although proven experience is valued over
education. Prior experience in the data center industry is a plus,
but not necessarily required. Experience with Ruby on Rails and
Mongrel is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that
must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential
functions of this job. While performing the duties of the job,
dexterity in using a telephone, computer keyboard and mouse, and
calculator while seated at desk are required. The employee may, based
on geographic location, be required to visit our data center located
in Tacoma, WA. The employee must regularly lift up to sixty pounds.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with
disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Besides our physical data center, all work is conducted from virtual
offices. Hours are flexible and there is no required dress code. The
candidate should be willing to be occasionally on call after hours
and may have to work weekends.

BENEFITS
While we are still small enough where we don"t have the same benefits
packages as big competitors, we offer a unique work environment that
is constantly changing and growing. We"re looking for some one who is
more interested in getting in on the ground floor of something fast
and fun. We want this job to be enjoyable for you, and as we continue
to grow, we will reward your performance handsomely. In addition, you
will also get to work day to day with equipment from companies you
hear about on a regular basis.

NETWORK TECHNOLOGIES
Below is a list of different network technologies and vendors we work
with regularly. Familiarity with most of these is a big plus.

     * Ruby on Rails, et la. (Subversion, Gems, Mongrel)
     * Barracuda Networks Load Balancers and Spam Firewalls
     * Cisco Products
     * Red Hat Linux ES 4
