[Ruby] Ruby LDAP?

I am very new to Ruby, but I see a lot of potential and I would like
to start using it in some of my every-day tasks.
One of the things I currently use a lot of perl for is interacting
with my OpenLDAP system. I am trying to write a ruby script that can
replace one of my perl scripts. But I haven't been able to get any of
the ruby-ldap libraries to work.
My desktop is Ubuntu.
Most of my servers are FreeBSD.
Many of my development machines are CentOS4.4 (RHEL4).
They all seem to have different and incompatible versions of LDAP,
NET::LDAP, URI::LDAP, or activeldap.
I haven't been able to get even a basic connection working on all my
systems; so my question is: what ldap libraries should I use? (I
require only basic auth and support for start_tls.)
