I think it's nice to do the snip-and-post thing if it's possible to
snip the appropriate section.  And the value for bottom posting for me
is largely that it encourages people to consider doing that.
Especially in highly branching threads that are really multiple
conversations -- my brain isn't very good at following multiple
conversations so it needs all the help it can get.

Quite a few mail clients have an option to collapse quoted text
(gmail, yahoo, thunderbird has a plugin).

We can always blame Microsoft and their Outlook/Exchange monopoly.
There are lots of reasons email clients suck: the fact that "free and
web based" or "works with exchange"/"groupware" features so overshadow
any other features, the lock in factor, etc...
