[Ruby] How to patch ruby-mysql bindings?

Could anyone describe how to patch the ruby-mysql bindings?  I came
across a post on the RailsExpress blog about a patch that can increase
mysql speeds (http://railsexpress.de/blog/articles/2006/10/05/make-ruby-mysql-create-less-garbage)
and I wanted to give it a try because I could really use it, but don't
have a clue how to actually use the patch.

I have looked around and can't find anybody describing how to apply a patch.
